Harry Belafonte Is Still Brilliant!

This morning I came across this article from Harry Belafonte's Facebook page, and ended up reading it four times because of its perfection. I have always loved Harry Belafonte. Not only is he an icon, but he is a personal hero of mine.

In this article, he hits the nail right on the head when he speaks about celebrities in certain minority groups (yes he named names) giving back to the world and the level at which they do it. Basically, he spoke about what I have said for years, which is those celebrities that makes tens of millions of dollars per year and then give back less than a fraction of one of their millions to certain causes.

I was always on the fence with issues like this because I never want to be the person who walks around saying that celebrities should put their money here or there and help this cause. I think its not my business and not my concern. However, there comes a point when a person's lifestyle becomes so out of control that they don't even know what to do with their money anymore and instead of saving money or putting it to use someplace where it is desperately needed, they just blow it on another useless item.

In this case, Mr. Belafonte is talking about Jay-Z and Beyoncé (gee who would've seen that coming?) but I am going to expand this with another example (which will probably bring me some hate but have I ever cared?): The Jackson Family! Katherine Jackson is given a $70,000/month allowance to take care of Michael's children. Excuse me, what? I'll spell it out for you just in case you thought I made an error: SEVENTY THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS! For 3 kids! Now before this goes any further, yes I completely understand that they lost their father and their lives will be drastically changed forever. I understand that they were used to a certain lifestyle and as their father not being there is change enough, Katherine and the estate probably don't want to bring any other life altering changes to the table (such as, I don't know, only getting $50,000 to mess around with per month?). With all of that said, that is a ridiculous waste of money. Should it not go to something useful? I know Michael had instructed a large portion of his money go to charity and I seriously commend him for that. Now why don't his mother and the kids follow in those footsteps.

I really feel for these kids. I have nothing but compassion for them and their ages and what they not only have had to deal with, but what is coming that they will have to deal with for the rest of their lives. But I think that now is a perfect time to try and help them lead a slightly more modest lifestyle. Perhaps I'm wrong? Yeah no - I'm not. On a separate note, Paris Jackson really needs to learn to keep her mouth shut and her Twitter quiet about family issues. She will regret all of this in the future. But thats a different blog for a different day.

Anyway, the point is that Mr. Belafonte has once again struck gold (and probably some nerves in the media) and said exactly what needed to be said on this subject. It's hard for me personally to have a lot of respect for a lot of celebrities and people in the media for what they do (whether I like it or not) when they sit in their mansions and crap money. It makes me sick. They eat Benjamins while children all over the world don't have anything to eat, are forced to work, beaten, raped, and killed for no reason at all. It's disgraceful and Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Chris Brown (HAHAHA! Sorry), and many others should all be ashamed that just sit back and watch. Especially the first two I named considering they now have a child.

Thank you Mr. Belafonte, for speaking publicly on behalf of those of us that feel this way but will not be heard nearly as well as you will.
